A Japanese paper authored by Mitoshi et al, titled "Suppression of Allergic and Inflammatory Responses by Essential Oils Derived from Herbal Plants and Citrus Fruits", and published in the International Journal of Molecular Medicine 33:1643-1651 (2014), investigated twenty Essential Oils (EO).They reported that Cympogon citratus (or Lemongrass Oil) was the most efficacious out of the twenty investigated in reducing inflammation without any allergic effect. After reviewing the report, we came to a realization that there were additional EO's known in Indian Ayurveda for treating inflammation, which were not studied. We undertook a scientific investigation to study those leading candidates, as well as investigate them in combination with Lemongrass Oil. Our results confirmed their finding. This was the basis of our foundation and the explanation why we use Lemongrass Oil as the main ingredient in our all-natural product. The additional oils we used were Hedychium Spicatum and Zanthoxylum Armatum.
Pharmacological trials established that systemic manifestation of Joint Pain might be accounted for by release of inflammatory molecules of Cytokines such as TNF-alfa (tumor necrosis factor), Interleukin IL-1beta, and 1L-6 from joints in a Joint Pain animal model. Therefore we carried out the biological study in a "Joint Pain mice model" with the various oils and their mixtures with Prof. Samir Bhattacharya, Ph.D., Research Emeritus Professor, School of Life Sciences, Visva-Bharati, a Central University, Santiniketan, West Bengal.
Our outcome of the "Joint Pain mice model study" was positive and the synergistic effect of three EO's was well demonstrated. Our blends were found to bring down or regulate these Joint Pain markers in blood serum in pre and post measurement of these Cytokines.
We then went ahead to make an aqueous emulsion cream of the three oils blend for topical application, and started a human clinical trial at the Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Guwahati. We received positive feedback from this institute as well and that's when we decided to commercially develop the product after procuring a manufacturing license from the Drug Control (Ayush) regulatory bodies. The cream was launched in India with the HERBOJOINT trademark.

"Demonstrated efficacy of reduction of inflammatory cytokines with the synergistic blend of essential oils was established in a Joint Pain animal model with topical treatment. It was carried out in the labs of Prof. Samir Bhattacharya (Former Director IICB - Kolkata, CSIR-NEIST - Jorhat, and Research Emeritus Professor, School of Life Sciences, Visva-Bharati, a Central University, Santiniketan, West Bengal)".
